Applying the Ten Commandments

July 6, 2009

The gentlemen at Table Talk play an interesting game, Ten Commandments In The News, observing which of the Ten Commandments are being broken in specific news stories. This is a great idea. The premise is simply to apply the practice of analyzing that which is happening around us in Biblical terms, discerning which commandment is being broken. This is something we should do all the time, which I believe is their point. When we train ourselves to continuously don our belief in Christ (not just on Sunday morning) we sharpen the tools needed to distinguish between that which is good in our life, and that which is harmful. This is a great example of why it is so important that we read and hear the Word of God regularly. The Ten Commandments are often the first scripture children learn, and yet it seems that we neglect the application of their meaning when it comes to this temporal life. Perhaps more emphasis should be put on the practices of the historic church, such as memorizing the Ten Commandments, The Creeds, and The Lord’s Prayer. In liberal settings, children are rarely taught to do such repetitious work anymore, which is a shame. It is equally despairing that adults dismiss the importance of learning such basic information, especially when considering the climate of our culture today.
