Emergent Poetic

2010 February 3

I have begun a new writing project. Men like Doug Pagitt, Brian McLaren, Rob Bell, Dan Kimball, Tony Jones – actually, the list is far too long to write out each erring name – these men like to see innovation and a certain cultural embrace that captivates the attention of specific audiences while distorting the truth of God’s Word. Rob Bell wants pastors to focus on poetry, lyricism, and guerilla theater; Dan Kimball thinks Christianity should be vintage but only in so far as it fits into a specific trendy sub-cultural clique that longs for cool cats and quarter mile romanticism; Doug Pagitt, on the other hand, has reveled the truth behind the rot that is plaguing the contemporary church.

I reject the ideas of the above mentioned (and all their cohort’s) concerning what the Christian church is and what it should be doing. I do, however, recognize that I am, in part, a product of my generation and to this end I can utilize the interests of my past to accommodate their longing for innovation, tapping into my punk-beat-rockabilly-ska-retro-vintage-greaser artistic inclinations to satisfy their hunger, while taking up issues I have with their liberal post-modern subjectivity. The project and eventual book is titled, Hemlock. It is a collection of poetic prose, that is loosely based on the spontaneous prose style made famous by Jack Kerouac. Loosely? Yes - I revise. In this book my language is purposefully strong. It is my hope that by meeting these men where they’re at, the truth of God’s Word will shine through. It is in the greatest love for my neighbor that I aim to combat their error which is now spreading throughout Christianity.

In keeping with the spirit of spontaneous prose and cool sub-culture abandon, a reading of each section of Hemlock will be released via YouTube and on the Hemlock page as it is written, prior to publication, so that you can easily get your Hemlock fix. Once the book is complete the sections will be organized and assembled to fit into one cohesive book combating liberal Christianity’s methodology, poetically.
